Sculptor Steve Mansfield creates unique hand crafted driftwood art. Staring at piles of driftwood for weeks, sometimes months, until inspiration strikes and two pieces come together. I used an old boat spar for years as a garden chair arm before it became an art lark bird!
With a little bit of sanding, a dab of paint, a rusty old nail, suddenly an artwork is created.
Living across the fields from a Cambridge nature reserve for six or seven years, watching grebes dance and herons fish.
Shearwaters, gannets and puffins, cormorants, razor- bills and guillemots, black-backed gulls and kittiwakes all spotted as a volunteer warden on Skomer Island.

Wind and tide washed with worm holes, knots, burns, cracks, natural textures and rusting nails showing traces of previous use.
Recycled driftwood, hand crafted with maybe some lime wax or a touch of varnish, and a roofing nail for the eye.

The sea sculpts driftwood, wearing away the soft grain, beautifying cracks, holes, rusty old nails, and flaky paint. Inspired by the form and texture I make artworks using just a few hand tool, enhancing the found shapes - finishing the sculpture that was started by the sea.
Across the Atlantic, along the Avon Gorge and the banks of the Severn... storm washed onto a Mediterranean shore... driftwood art inspired by wading birds of the coast and estuaries.

Indoor displays keep their colours for years. Outdoors they soften with lichen and moss, becoming part of the natural landscape.
Darkening when wet and bleaching in the sun, driftwood keeps on weathering when displayed outside.

"Thank you so much for sending this for my birthday. What a perfect piece of sculpture and the most special present for me! We are gradually extending our duck family to nineteen and they seem to be quite at home with the water from the brook and the wet soggy field" Fiona P
